Import-Export Code (IEC) Definition

That an IEC is a 10-digit code issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) to businesses or individuals involved in importing or exporting goods and services from India.

Nature of the Firm Obtaining an IEC

IEC can be obtained by any individual, company, partnership firm, Limited Liability Partnership (LLP), or any other type of entity engaged in import or export activities.

For exporters or importers, having an IEC is mandatory for all

but it plans to do so in the future, it still needs to obtain an IEC beforehand.

  2. The applicant must have a bank account in the name of the firm or individual, as IEC is issued in the name of the applicant

Eligibility to Build an IEC Code

Any type of business registration: sole proprietorship, partnership, private limited companies, charitable organizations dealing with imports and exports in India can register for import export code, irrespective of the size. However, an IEC Number is not required for the import/export of goods for personal use, which is not connected with trade, manufacturing, or agriculture. There is no need for a business setup.

IEC (Import Export Code) is mandatory for anyone who is looking to start his/her import/export business in India. It is issued by the DGFT (Director General of Foreign Trade). IEC is a 10-digit code that has lifetime validity.

All IEC holders are now legally required to update and validate their IEC Details, even if there are no changes, from April to June once every year through the Online system, failing which their IEC shall be de-activated and no import or export activity will be possible.
